Process

This new body of work titled In the Wake, is a reflection on rituals and processes of alteration I grew up with. Made of rubber latex and carbon black dye, hair bonding glue is used to adhere weaves to your head. A process performed upon me starting at age 13. A process I was excited to experience, it meant I too could be beautiful, desirable; but continual usage of this material incrementally destroys the hair follicles and the lack I was conditioned to understand innately existing within me became real. Pouring large amounts of the material on a flat surface, once it begins to cure I spring into action, working intuitively defamiliarizing the material. A new ritual emerges oriented towards healing and resurrection.
