Sean Kelly is delighted to present Undercurrents a group exhibition featuring the work of NXTHVN’s Cohort 03 Studio Fellowship artists: Layo Bright, John Guzman, Alyssa Klauer, Africanus Okokon, Patrick Quarm, Daniel Ramos, and Warith Taha organized by Curatorial Fellows Marissa Del Toro and Jamillah Hinson.
Featuring a range of media including painting, sculpture, video, and photography the artists explore an array of concepts that intersect and diverge with each other’s creative approaches. These seven artists reveal the present undercurrents of poignant topics within contemporary art from each of their unique perspectives. As studio fellows at NXTHVN, they spent the year expanding their individual practices in greater detail – tapping into new visual languages, such as minimalist styles of mark making, bridging painting with found objects and assemblage techniques, underlying narratives about Black and queer presence, and evoking memory through architectural motifs.
This exhibition positions the artists in intimate conversation with one another while examining both the intricacy and vastness of their practices. Using exploratory techniques which stretch and reimagine the use of materials, the artists layer and shape their media to give visibility to nuanced, depth-filled narratives. Through the examination of their distinct processes, the themes in Undercurrents converge around notions of cultural hybridity, transformations of the body, and the many ways in which human longing manifests through works of art.
