Opening Saturday, March 9, 2024
Free and open to the public

Join us for the opening of To Echo a Shadow, curated by NXTHVN 2023-2024 Curatorial Fellows, Marquita Flowers and Clare Patrick. The exhibition features works by Ash Arder, Torkwase Dyson, Lungiswa Gqunta, Oluseye.

Through site-specific installations by Ash Arder and Lungiswa Gqunta and select artworks by Oluseye and Torkwase Dyson, To Echo a Shadow engages each artist’s practice through migration, trade and memory. These themes are presented through ephemeral materials of sound, soil, dirt, light and inherited knowledge. The selected artists have journeyed through various family routes such as: across urban and suburban centers of South Africa; Southern US to Detroit and Chicago; and the UK to West Africa, as well as the Americas. Each artist is heavily influenced by their present geographic locations, ancestral roots and generational and current ties to these sites. Through this exhibition, the curators propose a practice of responsive working, where care and acknowledgment are guiding principles in the face of the cold conditions of industry.
