Born Amanda Caroline de Oliveira Pereira in 1993 in São Paulo, Brazil, Pereria came to use the name “Semente” (pronounced Seh Mein Chi) through their capoeira practice. Semente is the Portuguese word for seed which symbolizes the way they seek to plant seeds of liberation through their work. Dr. Semente is a warrior woman who uses art and education as my weapons of choice to fight the injustices that impact people of the African diaspora, especially women and queer people. Their visual and performance artwork features personal and collective narratives of the African diaspora from the spiritual, political, social, and economic perspectives using a range of mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, clay, foam, wood, textiles, jazz-aesthetic performance, dance, capoeira. In 2022, they completed their Ph.D. in African and African Diaspora Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently the John Walsh Fellow in Museum Education at Yale University Art Gallery.
